Almost 500 jobs will be created if plans to buy an old barracks site in Brighton are approved next week.

Brighton and Hove City Council is likely to buy part of Preston Barracks from the Ministry of Defence for an undisclosed sum with the help of Government funding.

Proposals will go before the policy and resources committee at a meeting on Wednesday.

The site, off Lewes Road in Brighton, would house new business developments linked to Brighton University and could create 460 jobs.

Proposals include an innovation centre and start-up centres for local entrepreneurs.

The site would also contain the headquarters and research department of an international company. There would also be room for some affordable housing and a community centre.

Cabinet economic development and regeneration councillor Don Turner said: "Our city's economy is building a future around a range of high-tech companies.

"This site offers the opportunity to bring forward another key development."

If councillors agree, a detailed planning exercise will be carried out to ensure proposals fit in with the area.

Government cash from the Single Regeneration Budget scheme will be needed as the council does not have the full amount to buy the land.

Other parts of the barracks have already been developed with the Saunders Park housing estate and some retail warehouses.

The council has an option to buy the barracks land under an agreement dating back to 1937.
