James Kirtley believes his re-modelled action will make him bowl even quicker.

Sussex's vice-captain was cleared to continue his domestic and international career by an ECB bowling panel after three hours of deliberations at Lord's yesterday.

And that could mean bad news for first division batsmen when Kirtley, last season's leading wicket-taker, and Sussex start the new season next month.

He said: "The results of the biomechanical tests we did suggest that I've got quicker. I'm bowling from a slightly higher projection now which also means I should get more bounce. The proof will be when we play Surrey in our first game, but I believe the work we've done has enhanced my career and will make me a better bowler."

The panel, chaired by David Acfield and including England's chairman of selectors David Graveney and ECB bowling advisor Bob Cottam, concluded that Kirtley had 'significantly improved' his action.

It followed three months of intensive work by Kirtley with Cottam and Sussex coach Peter Moores after he was reported by match referee Nashuat Ali for a suspect action on his England debut during a one-day international against Zimbabwe last October.

Kirtley added: "I'm obviously delighted with the decision.

"Hopefully, if I can produce some good performances for Sussex in Division One, I will again have the honour of representing my country."
