Brighton and Hove diners raised £12,000 for the homeless by adding £1 to their restaurant bills.

The money from the scheme, organised by national charity StreetSmart, will go to projects giving current or former rough sleepers the chance to build a better life.

Staff at 25 restaurants helped administer the scheme, sponsored by Barclays and backed by The Argus, during the Christmas period.

Homeless charities St Patrick's Trust, the Clock Tower Sanctuary, Stopover, Homeless And Lonely, Crossover and the Brighton Emmaus Trust will all benefit.

Restaurants which took part included: Blind Lemon Ally; Ci Restaurant; Coriander Restaurant; Curve; English's Oyster Bar & Seafood Restaurant; Grapevine; Krakatoa; La Petite Fourchette; Maharajah; Mosaic; New Whytes Restaurant; OkiNami; Prompt Corner; Quentin's; Rajah Restaurant; Regency; Saucy; Terre a Terre; The Tureen; Trogs; and The Strand.
