Leading Labour councillor Simon Charleton today called on party members, councillors and MPs to urge restraint on America in dealing with Iraq.

In a letter to Queen's Park ward members he said: "Some things are more important than parish pump politics and the Bush administration's increasingly hawkish attitude to Iraq worries me more than anything else at the moment.

"I urge party members to write to the Prime Minister and, far from lending support to the US Government, urge him to use his influence to restrain the US from an invasion of Iraq.

"It seems as if we are being dragged closer and closer to joining a war coalition against the Muslim world.

"This poses dangers that all citizens, regardless of party politics, should be concerned about.

"We were elected to represent local people on Brighton and Hove City Council but there comes a time when even local politicians have to speak out against the drift towards conflict in the Middle East.
