A late goal denied Lewes victory in their relegation clash with Stourport in National League division one on Sunday.

Home side Stourport salvaged a 2-2 draw thanks to a goal two minutes from time to leave the relegation issue in the melting pot.

The bottom five sides are separated by just two places with Lewes remaining second from bottom in the play-off spot while this weekend's opponents Chelmsford jumped from bottom to sixth in the table after a 3-2 win over Barford Tigers.

Lewes now have four games to secure their survival, with the Chelmsford fixture being followed by games against three of the top four in St Albans, Bournville and Beeston.

Manager Peter Boyse said: "It keeps everything very tight. If we had won, and it looked like we would do at one stage, we would have been up to sixth. If we had lost we would have been back down the bottom again.

"A draw was probably a fair result. I wouldn't say Stourport didn't deserve an equaliser but it is still disappointing.

"It is very tight but we are fighting hard. Bournville and Beeston are both beatable, especially if they have nothing to play for."

Lewes were down to a bare 11 players after three pulled out on the day, including Simon Owen and Stuart McConachie, who were both unwell.

Despite this, they turned in a fine performance and took the lead from a short corner on 31 minutes through Ian Hutchinson.

Stourport levelled on half time when a short corner was deflected into the roof of the net by Phil Lashford.

Lewes regained the lead with a fine goal midway through the second half after Carl Wright ran from halfway into the circle. His shot came back off the keeper and Barnaby Stubbs smashed home.

The home side piled on the pressure in the closing stages and were rewarded in the 68th minute when Jon Willicombe swept the ball home.
