The first two events of the cycling road season at Storrington this weekend have both attracted good fields.

GS Stella's 18km time trial on Saturday has an entry of 97 riders, while their 42km event on Sunday has a field of 92.

Promoter Mark Jones says: "I'm pleased to get such a good response at this time of year. Riders don't normally show such enthusiasm before the season really gets going in March."

Hampshire ace Malcolm Cox (St Raphael), who won both events last year, returns to do battle with other star visitors such as Tim Stevens (Team Clean, Surrey) and professional Harry Lodge from Salisbury.

Sussex riders include Peter Tadros (VC Bayeux), Tristan Court (Brighton Mitre), James Dear (Eastbourne Rovers) and GS Stella's Dave Dent.

The course for both events includes the tough climb over the Downs at Houghton. The HQ is Rydon School, Rock Road, Storrington, and Saturday's event starts at 2pm. Sunday's starts at 10am.

Brighton Excelsior had a good turnout for their Turbo Marathon at the Adur Centre in Shoreham, despite the atrocious weather.

Teams of riders, including youngsters from Shoreham's VC Jubilee club, kept pedalling on a row of training machines for 12 hours to help raise funds towards the Centre's new climbing wall.

One of the first riders was Dave Shepherd, six times winner of the Sussex 12-hour championship. He said: "At least you don't have to balance on a turbo trainer, unlike when you ride on the rollers, but it's still hard work."

After completing his 20-minute stint Shepherd rode through gales and rain back to his home near Petworth. He said it was good training for the GS Stella's events.

The Regent RC did their best to contact as many riders as possible about the cancellation of their cyclo-cross at Dorothy Stringer School in Brighton. The course was waterlogged and although the riders could have coped, the school were concerned that the grounds would have been churned into a quagmire.

Sussex League champion Jonathan Sharpe managed to get a ride in and he finished third in an open race at The Bowl in Milton Keynes.
