People who install free software on computers at work could face criminal charges.
US computer technician David McOwen installed a programme on the PCs at DeKalb Technical College in Atlanta, Georgia, without first asking permission from the college.
He was charged with eight counts of computer theft and computer trespass, carrying a fine of up to £294,000 and 120 years in jail.
After a two-year legal battle, Mr McOwen made a plea agreement and walked away with probation, a small fine and community service.
