A stylish four-star hotel is to be built in the centre of Brighton as part of the Jubilee Street redevelopment.

The £10 million hotel will be operated by myhotel, which opened its first hotel in Bloomsbury, London, three years ago.

That hotel has been mentioned in several hotel guides and is aimed at high-income, creative professionals.

The Brighton hotel will have 80 beds and is part of a £45 million scheme, called The Square, being developed by Mill Group and Norwich Union Public Private Partnership Fund.

Other features on the old car park site will include shops, leisure facilities and a new central library for Brighton.

There will be contemporary apartments, offices, studios and affordable housing. Mill Group development director Erik Pagano said: "We are delighted to have secured such an exciting new concept as myhotel for The Square.

"It is a major endorsement of its appeal to high-quality, branded operators and sets the tone for the scheme's stylish character."

He said the hotel would attract clients who liked its atmosphere and that of Brighton as a whole.

The complex will be the fifth for myhotel in the UK. It will follow the next expected opening in Chelsea and others planned for Glasgow and Paddington.

Andy Thrasyvou-lou, chairman of myhotel, said: "Brighton offers one of the most exciting opportunities for the myhotel expansion plans to date. It will be the first new build in our portfolio.

"The shared vision and enthusiasm of myhotel and Mill Group will make this one of the most successful and vibrant locations in Brighton."

Mill Group is shortly to put 45,000sqft of restaurant and retail space on to the market.

It has gained flexible opening and licensing conditions to suit a range of different operators.

It is also talking to a local radio station seeking to relocate its broadcasting suite into the development.

The £11 million library complex, to be built under a private finance initiative, is expected to attract 1.3 million people a year.

Planning permission for The Square was granted in November.

Work on the 3.7-acre site will start next month and should be completed in 2003.
