Full marks to speed skater Gerald Spicer who, at 72 years old, is still willing to put his ice skates on to help us Keep Sussex Skating.
The KSS archives have a copy of an Evening Argus feature (August 7, 1992) which shows Gerald demonstrating his prototype Zimmer frame invention for keen ice skaters who will never willingly hang up their skates.
At the Brighton Centre's Get Your Skates On! event, the united call from the community was adamant for Brighton and Hove City Council to sanction a site at Black Rock for our new full-sized ice arena.
The skating culture is in the genes of our citizens (including Gerald Spicer) and will never say die.
But our culture has been sidelined for years. This is a blot on the council's initiative record, especially when KSS has an ice developer and operator waiting in the wings.
