Safety fears have forced a bonfire society to cancel a march and display.

Eastbourne Bonfire Society had planned a bonfire, fireworks and procession along the town's seafront on December 21.

But there were fears for the safety of the public along Royal Parade.

The society was told it would need to apply for a road closure, which would take at least six weeks.

This would have meant the bonfire celebrations could not have been held until well into the New Year so the society has reluctantly called off the event.

Society chairman Derek Legg said: "We felt that to hold the bonfire and fireworks without the procession would be an anti-climax after all the publicity."

He added the society was organising fund-raising events throughout the year.

Members of the society will be in Terminus Road, Eastbourne, on Saturday, December 8, looking for new recruits.
