The lives of people sleeping rough could be saved thanks to a charity's waterproof sleeping bags.

Hove-based charity Off The Fence Trust (OTFT) is funding the sleeping bags thanks to a £10,000 grant from the Lloyds TSB Foundation.

The money will also pay the rent on the charity's Portland Road shop for the next two years and buy gloves, hats, scarves and socks for rough-sleepers.

The Rev Paul Young, the trust's project manager, said: "Thanks to the funding from the Lloyds TSB Foundation, we will not only be able to help more people this year but also provide them with items such as waterproof sleeping bags, which are life-saving provisions to people on the streets.

"We have never had any funding in the past and before we had the shop we ran the project from a derelict house."

Projects carried out by the charity include Project Ark, which offers emergency shelter to vulnerable homeless people.

Pauline Langridge, branch manager of Lloyds TSB Portslade, said: "The Lloyds TSB Foundation is committed to working with under-funded grass roots charities which meet social and community needs, such as the Off The Fence Trust."
