A council notice on Brighton and Hove buses asks: "Do you know that on Sunday evenings most bus services only run because Brighton and Hove City Council pays for them ?"

No, I did not know that and, if it is strictly true, I think the council should keep quiet about it.

What is the justification for subsidising a small group of Sunday evening bus travellers? What is special about them?

In a democratic society, subsidies that come out of our taxes should surely be spread across the complete range of bus services.

Fares on Sunday evening buses could simply be increased until they become as economically viable as buses run at any other time.
