East Grinstead and Eastbourne are in the hat for the first round of the National Intermediate Cup, but Horsham and Chichester are out.

Eastbourne's 14-8 home win over London Two North outfit Ipswich was the pick of the results.

Tremendous defence was the key to their win, with Danny Craven and Jamie Bremer outstanding in midfield.

Spencer Pullinger's try was converted by Bremer to keep the hosts in the game at 8-7. Then Paul Newell raced 50 yards for the crucial score two minutes from time, with Bremer again adding goal points.

Winger Matt Lester scored four tries as East Grinstead won 35-13 at home to a Horsham side who had Matt Stone and Carl Harman sent-off.

Paul Goodwin, whose break set up Lester's opening score, added a try for Gs with Steve O'Reilly kicking two conversions and two penalties.

Hooker Dan Senneck got Horsham's try while Andy Stone converted and added two penalties.

Gs spokesman Steve Perry said: "We were pleased with the win but Horsham stuck at it well. They looked stronger than two or three teams in our division."

Chichester went down 22-0 at Sutton and Epsom but it was a tremendous effort by the Sussex One side against opponents going well in London One.

Cheered on by a large contingent of supporters, Chi kept the game scoreless for 20 minutes.

Skipper Ben Polhill said: "That was our gameplan. We wanted to stand toe to toe with them and see how they liked it.

"Even when they got a try the floodgates never opened. We just kept tackling."
