People who want to celebrate a traditional Christmas can find all the ingredients on their doorstep.

Small specialist businesses across Sussex can supply the goodies.

Pam Foden, executive officer for the West Sussex Economic Forum, said: "There is no need to travel outside the county to make this year's traditional Christmas fare different and delicious.

"We are proud of the number of specialists who can offer a great range of food and drink to tempt every taste bud.

"People can give their friends and family a real treat and make Christmas special with home-grown and locally-made produce."

For Christmas dinner there is a wide range of produce, from turkeys, organic vegetables, speciality sausages and award-winning English wines to hundreds of cheeses, home-made liqueurs, hand-made luxury chocolates and traditional fruit cakes.

West Wantley, a specialist poultry farm at Storrington, produces 10lb to 20lb birds and Thomas the Butchers, of Lindfield, has a range of speciality sausages prepared on the premises.

Rhoda Baker and Miles Denyer have started delivering organic vegetables to homes in Sussex from their market garden, O for Organic, at Hankham.

Real Food Direct, based in New England Street, Brighton, began three years ago as a part of the Magpie Recycling Co-operative.

Initially set up under the name Magpie Home Delivery, it complemented the recycling business by finding a market for products made from recycled materials.

It also home delivers organic produce. The selection includes vegetables from Stanmer Park, herbs from Ashurst Organics in Plumpton, apple juice from Oakwood Farm in Robertsbridge, and Sussex honey.

Springs Smoked Salmon, of Fulking, supplies hotels and restaurants throughout the UK with salmon, fresh oysters and smoked rainbow trout.

Home-made desserts from a local delicatessen and locally-produced wines can complete the meal.

Sussex is home to some of the finest English wines. Bookers Vineyard, of Bolney, has a range of acclaimed white, red and sparkling wines. Gospel Green, based near Billinghurst, makes Sussex Cyder. The sparkling wine produced at Ridgeview Vineyard, Ditchling Common, has scored top marks in blind tastings of champagne and sparkling wines.

If ginger beer or non-alcoholic ginger wine is more to your taste, Gran Steads Ginger, at Old Fort Road, Shoreham, can be drunk on its own, used as a spice or added to desserts and ice creams.

Twineham Grange Farm specialises in vegetarian Parmesan and ricotta cheese. A range of cheeses is also available at the award-winning Horsham Cheese shop, in the Carfax. It also has a range of pickles, preserves, mustards and chutneys to liven up those left-overs.

Shoreham-based Sussex Spice Company claims to be a premier herb and spice specialist, with a free mail order service.
