A man died and his wife was taken to hospital after a suspected gas leak at their home.

Gerald Brassell was pronounced dead shortly after paramedics arrived at the semi-detached home he shared with wife Caroline in Collier Road, Hastings.

Mrs Brassell was taken to the Conquest Hospital after inhaling fumes, which police believe stemmed from a faulty gas appliance, and later discharged.

Firefighters were called to the three-bedroom house, along with Transco engineers who isolated the gas supply just before 10pm on Saturday.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

A Transco spokesman said the faulty appliance was a boiler, believed to have been leaking carbon monoxide.

Leading Firefighter Lawrence Adey said: "To avoid incidents like this, we would advise people with any doubt to get in touch with their gas board."
