Glyn White is facing up to the biggest challenge of his life in trying to resurrect the fortunes of St Leonards.

Saints have been plunged into turmoil in recent weeks as a number of men have unsuccessfully tried to reverse the team's slide down the Dr Martens Eastern Division.

Micky Taylor was sacked three weeks ago, Terry White, the man brought from rivals Hastings to replace him quit within a week, and caretaker boss Andy Thomson has presided over three defeats since then.

The latest was a 4-2 loss at home to Dartford and the new Saints boss is under no illusions as to where improvements must be made.

"They have been conceding too many goals," said the ex-Hastings Town reserve team manager.

"I want to use my contacts to get the best young local players. We are looking to finish about half way up the table and to steady the ship."

White, 39, will be assisted in his new role by Kevin Burgess and the pair know each other from their time together at the Pilot Field.

White added: "We are going to make ourselves hard to beat. We have let in 22 goals in five games. I've got my eye on a few players to blend with the staff already here. All local players will be given an opportunity, and hopefully the fans will get behind us."

Skipper John Crumplin has left the club by mutual agreement after being overlooked for the manager's position at The Firs.

"I'm disappointed I haven't got it but they have gone for a local person," said Crumplin. "Glyn has got the contacts and knows a lot of local players."

Meanwhile, Crumplin has wasted no time trying to find a managerial job elsewhere and has applied in writing for the job at Worthing.

Two new signings both made their debuts last week for St Leonards.

Jimmy Elford had an impressive debut for Saints in their home game against Dartford and Liam Barham, signed from Eastbourne Borough, played against Fisher Athletic.

Saints made on of their longest trips of the season to Rugby United for White's first game in charge today.
