The Eclipse have dubbed their goalkeeper The Cat, but not because their No.1 is extremely agile.

It is more that he is a wild party animal who regularly has to be dragged out of bed before games and during one recent appearance, Glen Reynolds actually fell asleep at half-time.

Reynolds, 22, nodded off during the interval of The Eclipse's game against The George and The Dragon.

With his side trailing 1-0, Reynolds awoke to a kick in the shin from player-manager Mark Goodman. Before Glen and his team-mates subsequently recovered enough to salvage a point from the 2-2 draw.

Reynolds said: "I like my beer. I had been out in Brighton and after a party at mine, I didn't get to bed much before 7am. Then I had to be up for 9.30 to play footy.

"At least I am always there regardless of what state I am in."

The keeper's unusual pre-match preparations have done little to hamper his side's fortunes in Sussex Sunday division five.

Impressively, The Eclipse have the best defensive record in the division and have lost just once in the league all season.

Last week The Eclipse did not have a game.

Reynolds said: "I was quite happy about that because I caught up on some sleep."

As a self-employed carpenter, Reynolds is regularly up at 5.45 am during the week and boss Goodman has forgiven him for his dozziness.

Goodman, 30, said: "He wasn't dropped after falling asleep but he dropped everything else. I am surprised he managed to drink the beers without dropping them.

"I was amazed to see him sleep at half-time the other week. I gave him a rude awakening and his excuse was that he had not slept at all the night before as he suffering from insomnia.

"I did know he had been out all night, though. Anyway the lecture on marking and tactics cured him.

"As long as he turns up then that's ok. Sometimes we have to go and get him from his bed.

"The problem is the only other goalkeeper we have shares a house with Glen and he is just as bad. Glen is the lesser of the two evils."

We gave Glen a crate of London Pride to help fuel his lifestyle and we were not the least bit surprised to hear it went in less than two days. Cheers to the lads at The Eclipse for being good sports.
