Residents were complaining about the granting of planning permission for an eight-storey block of flats in Connaught Road, Hove (The Argus, November 12).

I strongly agree with them that the building will be completely out of keeping with the surrounding properties.

My Conservative colleagues at the planning applications sub-committee also agreed with me that the building will be far too high and we all voted against the granting of planning permission.

The architects' panel had reported the development as being beautiful and exciting architecture but I do not believe it took into account the area where it is to be built. It looks like a very high office block inserted in the midddle of some fine buildings. An eight-storeys building will cut out light, affect the privacy of surrounding properties and create car-parking problems.
