Electric-shock dog collars (October 25) are widely used in the US and are readily available here. They should be banned.

They are frequently recommended by so-called dog behaviourists in the name of training or correction.

Dogs cannot learn if they are in a state of fear or panic, as induced by the pain of an electric shock.

If the dog needs a distraction from unwanted behaviour, kinder collars are available that are activated by the handler and emit a spray of citronella at the dog.

So please choose your dog trainer carefully. Be sure you are aware of the methods he or she employs and please don't do anything to your dog you wouldn't want done to yourself.

Even some professional trainers condone harsh methods.

Prevention is better than cure, so get along to a training class and socialise your dog.
