The Tories, Greens and Lib Dems are making mischief in the wake of the No vote.

But we should be clear that this was a single-issue referendum on the mayoral question.

Brighton and Hove City Council, whatever the vote on that issue, remains a Labour majority.

And Labour councillors were elected on a Labour manifesto to deliver Labour priorities: Effective public services, the conditions in which jobs can be created, a sustainable economy and environment, improved education and a reduction in crime.

I am sure I share with other Labour voters the sincere hope the council will continue to deliver on that manifesto.

There was much talk of democracy and accountability during the referendum and I am sure the Labour councillors who dissented on this one issue will now return to the Labour group, refreshed from the field of a single-issue battle, and support the current leader in delivering these services to the public.
