As a Yes campaigner, one must first congratulate the No campaigners on the impressive success of their campaign.

Yet the effects of their style must provide some doubts about its likely consequences.

First, the successful attempts at character assassination might well discourage many who feel prompted to perform prominent public service, although the coming re-introduction of government by committee will provide a powerful measure of anonymity for those involved.

Further, the victory of negative campaigning can only strengthen the resolve of those who prefer this style. This could weaken the feeling of community.

Yet again, the variety of political backgrounds from which the Allies For Democracy was assembled confirms one's view that politicians can only co-operate when the are against something.

Fear, one must conclude, is stronger than hope.

Indeed, such an attitude could well be extended. Co-operation, stimulated by a clear, positive goal, requires a clarity of perception not widely in evidence, it seems.

At least proportional representation will most likely minimise, if not remove, the power of negative politics.
