Horsham pulled off one of the shocks of the round at Lewes to progress to the third round of the Intermediate Cup.

Guy Hannell's side triumphed 17-13 and the Horsham skipper was thrilled.

He said: "I am delighted, we played some very committed and controlled rugby. Everyone had been looking forward to the game and it was the first time we have come together and all played well.

"It was nice to play some of the rugby we have be aiming for, but we must not get complacent in the league."

Dave Hemsley spurned a good scoring opportunity for Lewes early on, and Horsham made them pay as they grabbed two tries courtesy of Richard Billings and Jamie Bartle.

Centre Huw James reduced the visitors' advantage with a penalty and lock Andy Turned crashed over after a break from scrum half Scott Patto.

James added two conversions to briefly put Lewes in front but a Peter Mason try, and Andy Stone's conversion won it for Horsham.

Stuart Pearce got a penalty for the home side but captain Karl Flynn could not hide his disappointment.

Bognor travel to Eastbourne on Saturday for a crucial London 4SE game and the defeat was hardly ideal preparation.

Flynn said: "It was a real slip-up. We were confident we could win but we didn't perform. In fact it was a real lacklustre performance. There will be a few changes for the weekend because there are some people not pulling their weight."

Herb Merritt's Heathfield side progressed to the next round after Rye pulled out to gift them a bye.

East Grinstead beat Crowborough 31-0 at home to reach the third round but the scoreline was harsh on the visitors. The home side raced into a 19-0 lead, however, Grinstead did not score again until the final minutes when Paul Goodwin went over.

In the Junior Cup second round, Burgess Hill lost 31-12 at Newick after their original opponents, Old Freemans, were expelled from the competition for fielding ineligible players.

Hill trailed Newick 14-7 at the interval but afterwards the superior fitness of the home team told and Newick's backs won the game. Rob Thomas drove over for Hill's first try and Dave Webb scored in the corner after the break. Jon Maple kicked a conversion.

Midhurst were dumped out of the cup after a 49-7 defeat at home to Haslemere. Kevin Raishbrook scored a try and Mike Morgan converted the kick but the visitors ran out easy winners.
