East Grinstead are enjoying life in National Hockey League division two following a 4-3 win at home to Formby on Sunday.

Relegated last season, Grinstead have begun their division two campaign with two wins from three and are now fourth in the table.

Sunday's win over Formby was not particularly convincing but having not had the rub of the green against Oxford Hawks the previous week, Grinstead were happy to take the points.

Player-coach Ian Pattison said: "That was our worst performance so far. We seemed mentally tired in the second half and started ball watching but after the disappointment of last week we will settle for three points."

Grinstead started brightly and quickly took control of the midfield with Dom Male spreading play well and Richard Payne dropping deep at centre forward to link with the midfield, allowing his brother Ben to run at the Formby defence.

Formby had the occasional break but Mike Holland and Paul Turk, at the back, were able to deal with things confidently.

It was only a matter of time before Grinstead went ahead and they did so from an excellent strike from Richard Payne on 15 minutes.

Soon after a well worked corner dispatched by Pattison made it 2-0 and it seemed as if a large score was on the cards.

However, Grinstead relaxed and lost their shape allowing Formby back in the game and they soon capitalised, pulling the score back to 2-1 with a goal from Andrew Sidebottom.

Grinstead raised their game at the start of the second half and a fine solo effort from Ben Payne once again underlined their superiority.

Formby were again allowed back into the game after an error of judgement from keeper Richard Harris allowed Paul Mitchell to make it 3-2.

A fourth goal for Grinstead, this time by Male, clinched the points but Formby pulled one more back through Don Cock to set up a tense final few minutes in which Harris atoned for his earlier mistake with several saves.

A much changed Lewes side opened their division one campaign with a 4-1 defeat away to Doncaster.

With six new faces in the starting line-up and two others who appeared fleetingly towards the end of last season, this was always going to be a hard task for Lewes.

This was clearly evident in the opening 20 minutes as Doncaster raced into a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Stuart Boddy (two) and Colin Edwards.

After that, it was a reasonably even affair with Mark Wood adding a fourth for the home side midway through the second half and Welsh international Simon Owen, who has returned to the club from Canterbury, grabbing a consolation with a last minute penalty stroke.

Lewes manager Peter Boyse said: "There were a lot of positives once we woke up. It was going to take a bit of time for the new players to realise what the National League is all about and I don't think you could get a tougher baptism of fire than going to Doncaster.

"They are a tough lot. I knew we would suffer and we did. We got to grips with it in the end but we were not physical enough."

Boyse believes it may take several weeks for the new look side to start playing to their potential but he is confident things will improve.

He added: "It is a steep learning curve for some of them who haven't played National League hockey before but I think they are learning quite fast."
