Outdoor gear retailer Open Spaces of Brighton has been named a retailer of the year by one of its key suppliers, Terra Nova Equipment.
Ros Start, who runs the Trafalgar Street shop with her husband, Edward, was presented with her prize by Carolyn Budding, the suppliers' sales and marketing director at Go Outdoors, the outdoor equipment exhibition, held in Harrogate, Yorkshire.
Open Spaces won the award for the highest percentage increase in sales of Wild Country tents.
Mrs and Mr Start have run Open Spaces for more than 20 years.
They established the firm in a shop in Lewes Road and moved to Trafalgar Street five years ago. The business has a staff of five.
Mrs Start said: "Our staff are very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the outdoors and the type of gear needed for different conditions. That helped us to win the award."
In 1999, Mrs Start took part in a 100-mile walk to raise funds for the breast cancer unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.
