Three Bridges boss Darren Barker believes his club can win their first County League title if they maintain their impressive early-season form until Christmas.

Barker's side are giving leaders Burgess Hill a run for their money at the top of the table.

He said: "Our form has been reasonable. Even when we lost to champions Sidley 2-1 this week their management admitted they had got out of jail.

"We've played a lot away and have a reasonable record home and away so far.

"But we have to stay injury-free and keep the results going until Christmas to keep us in the frame "If we can do that then I absolutely feel that we can win our first County League title. I don't see any reason why not."

Barker was joint manager with John Crumplin last season when Three Bridges finished eighth.

But with former Albion defender Crumplin gone and now playing for St Leonards, Barker brought in his former Crawley Down management partner Alan Watson.

And things are looking good.

Barker said: "John and I were going reasonably well after about ten games last season but then the weather hit us and with less games the match fitness of the players started to suffer.

"But the players had a tough pre-season this term and the fitness is tremendous. I've also got some players in who have made a difference and the new £5,000 drainage system has helped."

Barker has brought in midfielder Lee Butcher from Horsham YMCA and James Liddell from Broadbridge Heath, while persuading defender Graham Rashbrook to return from Crawley Down.

But Barker is convinced he has found the real reason for the success.

He said: "We have a great team spirit. The side play for each other. That is the most important reason we are doing so well. Hopefully we will be serious contenders this year.

"The club have been runners-up in the mid-Eighties. Hopefully we can go one better."

Barker still keeps in touch with Crumplin.

He said: "John left to do a personal training course to become a fitness instructor and we are still good friends. Bringing in Alan has helped me because we have had several years working together before."
