Carl Barnett has won at the Horse of the Year Show with Shilstone Rocks Rough Mountain and is already planning retirement at the age of 14.

The duo took the British Mountain and Moorland Working Hunter Pony of the Year title at the Wembley International Arena.

But the Tanbridge House pupil said: "It might be nice to finish on that note after four years of riding.

"I have competed at Wembley and Olympia before but this is our best achievement. So perhaps that will be it."

He came through the jumping, leading the pony and riding style stages to grab victory.

Carl said: "Rocky did well jumping round the course and over the rustic fences. He was great again when I led him round and performed a great show when he impressed the judges with how well he could gallop, canter and trot.

"I was quite confident because we had gone well together through all the qualifying this year. I was not nervous. My mum and dad were there and they were really thrilled."

"It feels quite good to be the British No. 1."

The rider won a trophy and a rosette, but 13-year-old Rocky, a black pony of 12 hands, also got a reward.

Carl said: "I gave him a packet of Polos. He deserved it."

The partnership have been Supreme Ridden Champions at the Southern Dartmoor Show and received the best breed honour at Olympia two years ago. They won the opening three qualifying rounds in their 122cm class as they made it to Wembley to take on 11 other partnerships.

Despite the fact they were in the smallest class, Carl and Rocky took on the remaining three at the Horse of the Year Show to be crowned overall champions.

Father Nigel said: "I don't think in his wildest dreams that Carl thought he and Rocky could be overall champions. To see the pair of them galloping around the arena at Wembley is a treasured memory that none of the family will forget.

"The pair have had a wonderful career together. Rocky has been the most consistent winning pony in the country. The pair have never looked back after they teamed up and have more red rosettes and champions sashes than anyone could wish for.

"Rocky without doubt is a once in a lifetime pony."
