Parents are demanding the sacking of a primary school head over a report by the Government's schools watchdog.

The report from the Office for schools watchdog Ofsted slammed Gossops Green First School and laid the blame firmly on head teacher Sylvia Rogers.

A number of parents have organised a petition calling for her removal, saying it is the only way the school can continue to offer their children the type of education they have a right to. So far, 26 parents have signed.

A meeting is due to take place tonight between parents, governors and the head.

Michael Yardley, who has a five-year-old daughter at the 334-pupil school, said: "There is an enormous amount of feeling. We are horrified by the report.

"It was amazing reading, compulsive reading when you have a child at the school. We never had any real concerns about the school until we read that report.

"If this had been written about someone outside the education system they would have been fired. We are very, very angry. We have been totally let down by the school. The school should have done something sooner."

The report from Ofsted said: "This school has serious weaknesses. The poor leadership and management of the school at most levels, especially that of the head teacher, has restricted school improvement.

"Standards have declined in many subjects including core subjects."

Mrs Rogers was unavailable for comment.

West Sussex County Council said: "Over the last two years the school has experienced some difficulties.

"We now believe mechanisms are in place to build upon the strengths recognised by Ofsted."
