Jez Macdonald (Letters, September 20) is very misinformed. He suggests taxpayers subsidise car drivers.

He must be the only person who believes this to be the case. If one casts one's mind back to the fuel crisis of September 2000, Tony Blair clearly said he would love to cutduty on petrol and diesel but asked which services the public would like to see cut, schools or hospitals, in order to facilitate that cut in duty.

Jez's point on most cyclists obeying the rules of the road is also laughable. I drive 800 miles a week and, now the nights are drawing in, see cyclists everywhere with no effective front or rear lights (or none at all). My real gripe is this: Are all cyclists colourblind? Few, if any, bother to obey traffic lights.
