A school has been praised in a glowing report by inspectors.

Brighton and Hove High School was congratulated for its vision, results and caring atmosphere.

The all-girl independent school, in Montpelier Road, Hove, was singled out for the "relaxed but courteous" relationships between teachers and pupils as well as its high academic achievements.

The report, from the Independent Schools Inspectorate, the private sector equivalent of Ofsted, says teachers use their abilities to inspire and encourage pupils to think independently and work hard with enthusiasm.

Headteacher Ros Woodbridge is praised for leading the school with "verve and energy".

Mrs Woodbridge said: "To be called a 'very good school' in inspection-speak is as good as it gets. We're particularly delighted inspectors recognised the intangible aspects of the school which, of course, never appear in league tables."

The report does point out weaknesses in the links between the junior and senior sections.

Mrs Woodbridge said: "As in all inspection reports, there are areas for improvement and the recommendations form the basis of an action plan which we have produced."
