The greatest single cause of severe sight loss in this country is macular disease. More than half of all those who become registered blind or partially-sighted do so through this disabling condition.
The Macular Disease Society is the leading support organisation in UK, with almost 10,000 members. As joint founding member of the AMD Alliance International, the society is working hard to increase awareness and to stimulate research into the condition. This week is the first International Retina Week for the Prevention of Blindness, which is receiving strong support from the European Parliament.
The society's local support groups will be pleased to help anyone who wishes to receive more information. You can call the society's freephone helpline on 0800 328 2849.
