Lord Bassam seems to be suffering from "rattled cage syndrome". In defending his right to be elected city mayor, he only makes the electorate more inclined to say No in the referendum. That is, of course, if we really do have a choice.

Does Lord Bassam realise that it is not whether we have an elected mayor or not, but who is to be that mayor? Who will be making all the rules for the next four years?

Lord Bassam will agree that many positions can be bought - even a peerage, so I am told - but respect has to be earned, which could prove more difficult, as four years would not be long enough.
