Sussex are looking to their youngsters as they start planning for next season.

Academy all-rounder Carl Hopkinson, wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Ambrose and fast bowler Paul Havell have all been included in a 12-man squad for tomorrow's Norwich Union League game against promotion-chasing Durham at Hove (1pm).

Ambrose will definitely make his debut because Matt Prior will be linking-up with the England under-19s for the final test against West Indies at Riverside.

And there is a good chance that Hopkinson, a member of last season's title winning Sussex under-19 team, will also make his first team bow.

Havell, fresh from 12 wickets for the seconds against Kent earlier in the week, could also be in line for his competition debut should Sussex decide to rest either James Kirtley or Mark Robinson.

Prior, Michael Yardy, Bas Zuiderent and Robin Martin-Jenkins all drop out of the team beaten by Lancashire on Monday, a result which effectively ended Sussex's slim hopes of promotion from Division Two.

Chris Adams returns after missing the game with a swollen knee while Jamie Carpenter, who is anxious to press his claims for a new contract, keeps his place.

Coach Peter Moores said: "It's refreshing that there is some young talent coming through and this is a good opportunity to have a look at some of them.

"We have six games left and could finish on 40 points and we want to end the season positively because it sets the tone for how we set about next season.

"There are areas we want to work on and having some new faces will be like a breath of fresh air and I hope our supporters get behind them."

Hopkinson is the most interesting selection. Although not on the staff, the 19-year-old has played regular second team cricket and Moores describes him as an "exciting three dimensional cricketer."

He added: "He's earned his chance. He did very well for the Board XI against Gloucestershire earlier in the season. He bats well, bowls little seamers and is an outstanding fielder."

Durham are currently top of the Norwich Union second division and two more wins should earn them promotion.
