Brighton-based poster and print retailer Art Republic has produced a web site with information on artists, genres and art exhibitions around the world.

The What's On Worldwide section includes more than 1,250 art galleries and public museums in 55 countries with information on current special features.

Managing director Lawrence Alkin said: "The site was originally designed as a resource for art lovers and has a strong educational focus.

"At any one time, we have 50 in-depth reviews of exhibitions. We have had to employ a team of three full time staff to keep the site up-to-date and relevant."

The team also maintains arts travel guides for New York, Paris, London, Barcelona and Madrid.

Art Republic traded as In The Frame for ten years. Last month, the web site was amalgamated into its retail operation.

Mr Alkin said: "We now have a virtual gallery giving much more display space than the shop walls. The online catalogue includes more than 2,000 images."

The site has biographies of more than 150 artists and definitions of art genres from Renaissance to graffiti.

A web terminal has been installed in the shop in the North Laines.

Mr Alkin said: "Customers can log on for free and wander around our site or move out to any of the museum sites we have linked to.

"We want people to enjoy art as much we do and this is a way of making the information we have gathered available to as wide an audience as possible."
