Eastbourne police are treating a mass brawl in which an officer was stabbed as a racially motivated incident.
An argument broke out between clubbers and a doorman at Club Red after racist insults were hurled at a member of staff.
Police officers intervened with batons after the fight spilled on to the street outside the Clay Oven kebab shop in Seaside Road. During the violence a PC was stabbed in her right hand with broken glass.
She was taken to the Eastbourne District General Hospital for treatment to the shallow wound. She was later discharged and returned to duty.
PC Richard Fuller said: "There were about 20 to 30 people who witnessed what happened, including a taxi driver who we are looking to trace."
Three men are on police bail in connection with the incident, which happened at about 2am on Saturday.
Anyone with information should phone PC Fuller at Eastbourne on 0845 6070999.
