The winner of the Bognor Birdman competition hopes to make it a double victory when he launches himself from another Sussex pier.

Hand-gliding instructor Ron Freeman, 45, will travel 400 miles from his Northumberland home to compete in Eastbourne Birdman for the first time.

But although Mr Freeman will use the same 38ft glider he launched at Bognor, there will be some modifications.

The wing-span has been reduced to meet the 30ft criteria of the competition off Eastbourne pier while he has also been forced to cut the frame and pipework of the craft.

He said: "I'm always looking at different ways to make the glider go faster and further so it's great to meet other competitors and exchange tips."

Mr Freeman has amassed an admirable hoard of accolades since becoming fascinated with flying after watching Peter Pan as a young boy.

Since then he has broken several hang-gliding records, including with the British team which won the world championships in 1981.

He said: "You cannot beat the thrill of flying off the end of a pier with thousands of spectators looking on. Just taking part is fun but the thrill and adrenaline rush is incredible."

Mr Freeman reckons his chances of winning the contest on August 19 are high. He predicts he will travel about 100m, which would break the existing record of 71m.

He said: "In practice I've flown 120m and would love to fly that at Eastbourne. I'm looking forward to getting on Eastbourne pier and seeing how they do Birdman."

There will be live entertainment at the pier at 11am and throughout the day.

Fireworks at 9.30pm will officially mark the end of the Airbourne 2001 air show, which takes place during the four days before Birdman.
