Jack Smith, Brighton Mitre's youngest member, is aiming to win his club's trophy for most victories in a season.

The nine-year-old, from Shoreham, has been inspired by watching the Tour de France on television.

He said: "I loved watching the Tour de France. The winner Lance Armstrong is my favourite rider and I think when I grow up I can be in it too. It helps me to get more interested in racing.

"I've had quite a good start and I hope I can win the club trophy."

The Buckingham pupil, who also plays football for Junior Seagulls, is setting a hot pace in juvenile events in the Hove Park and Preston Park Leagues this season.

He has been helped by a new bike. He said: "My grandad, who is the club chairman, bought me the bike and it's great. I'm really enjoying it."

Jack's father Gary is considering taking his son further afield to compete.

He said: "There is a good standard at Herne Hill in south London. His talent shines through even though he is very young. He has big legs for his age. They give him power and he is very determined. Jack is the smallest and youngest at the club and wants to win.

"He has had 15 to 20 wins already this season and hopefully will get enough to win the trophy."
