Brighton University has been given £50,000 so its staff can enjoy a better lifestyle.

The college has been given the grant to promote practices to help recruit and retain staff and reduce absenteeism.

The university is currently deciding how to spend the money, which must be used to promote an improved work-life balance for its 2,500 full and part-time staff.

The Government funds, overseen by the Department of Trade and Industry, have been given to a variety of employers in the South-East including Watford Football Club, airline Easyjet and the House of Fraser group.

Jo Dowson, head of personnel at the university, said: "We are pleased we have been successful in our bid. We are in the process of employing consultants to evaluate schemes which will help recruitment and staff retention."

Organisations could use the money for educational activities linked to holidays, or the promotion of health and exercise, such as an association with a local health club.
