One of the most annoying nuisances of modern life is noise.

It can be caused by anything from Concorde overhead to a cockerel crowing early in the morning.

Some noise cannot be avoided but much of it can be controlled or moderated with a little bit of common sense and courtesy.

The Noise Abatement Society is now based in Brighton.

It can and does give people sensible advice on how to deal with sounds that drive them mad.

Over its 42-year life, the society has had many successes including campaigning for the legislation under which action can be taken against offenders.

The society should do all it can to make sure people know about its work rather than keeping quiet about it.
