A man found with severe head injuries in Brighton city centre was not the victim of crime, police said today.

The man either tumbled down a flight of steps or fell from 15ft from a window ledge.

He was discovered outside Brighton Town Hall at 2.30am on Tuesday.

Police initially feared he had been attacked and launched a full-scale inquiry.

But today Detective Inspector Bill Warner said: "We have carried out extensive inquiries and we believe he was not the victim of foul play.

"But we would still like to talk to anyone who saw this man on the night of the incident."

The man was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, and later transferred to Hurstwood Park neurological hospital in Haywards Heath.

His condition is said to be critical but stable. Police are still trying to identify the man.

They released a photograph of him in his hospital bed and they appealed to anyone recognising him to call Brighton CID on 0845 6070999.
