Independent arbitrators could be called in to find a solution to the Albion's plans for a new home at Falmer.

Hove MP Ivor Caplin has stepped into the growing row over proposals for a community stadium in Village Way North.

He has called for a meeting with Brighton University director Sir David Watson in an effort to kick-start the stalled negotiations.

Mr Caplin says the value of the land needed for the project is the main stumbling block to an agreement.

He is urging both sides to submit their own valuations and one from an independent valuer to an arbitration panel.

The panel would consist of representatives of all interested parties and be chaired by the city council.

Mr Caplin has written to Sir David offering to meet him at his office at Mithras House on Monday.

Mr Caplin, a lifelong Albion supporter, said: "I believe that Village Way North is the best site and that Village Way South would offer an alternative.

"I want to try to kick-start the negotiation process. I believe the key issue is the value of the land in question.

"It has long been understood that both sides would agree to the proposal once a reasonable settlement had been reached over the land.

"In my view, the only way to achieve this is through independent arbitration."

Sir David was in London today and was unavailable for comment.

His deputy, David House, said: "The value of the land has never been the issue here.

"We and the council had agreed to give the land to the club virtually free, for a peppercorn rent.

"What is at issue is the cost of replacing the buildings which currently house our staff and students. The difference between the club's valuation of those costs and ours is a factor of four.

"Sir David will meet with Mr Caplin next week and if he can bring with him any proposals which will take the process further to the benefit of all, we will be only too happy to listen."
