Trainer Lydia Richards is determined to follow up her first ever winner on her local course at the Glorious Goodwood meeting next month.

She has targeted the William Hill Mile on August 2 as the objective for Brilliant Red, the best flat race horse in her yard.

Quirky Brilliant Red, expertly ridden by Ian Mongan, won a valuable handicap on the course at the end of May and pleased his trainer with a good fourth at Sandown Park last Sunday.

The William Hill Mile is worth a total of £100,000 and together with the Stewards' Cup is the showcase handicap of the big Goodwood meeting.

Richards said: "Brilliant Red is in good shape after his race at Sandown. We ran him with no extras - visor, tongue strap and so on just to make a change.

"At the age of eight he needs humouring but maybe he will have the visor on again at Goodwood, we'll see."

Brilliant Red is not the easiest horse to train. He cannot cope with long distance travelling, otherwise Richards might have sent him to America after he won the Lingfield All Weather Derby two years ago.

He gets bored at home but cannot run too often because he is high in the handicap and it is difficult to find races for him.

Although his success in May was his first for 18 months, Brilliant Red has won a total of eight races worth about £110,000 and thanks to shrewd handling he retains his ability and enthusiasm.

With Royal Hunt Cup winner Surprise Encounter, trained by John Dunlop's son Edward, heading the weights on nine stone seven pound, Brilliant Red has nine stone to shoulder on August 2.

Mongan is booked for the ride and hopes are high down the hill at Funtington that he can repeat his course and distance success of six weeks ago.

Lydia's star chaser, Eau de Cologne, returned to the yard from his holiday at grass last Monday. "He has summered well, but he won't run until the Autumn." said the trainer.

One of the most improved chasers of last season, Eau de Cologne is likely to be seen in the Desert Orchid Chase at Wincanton at the end of October or the Charisma Chase at Kempton Park a day earlier.

Sir Michael Stoute's Medicean heads 30 acceptors for the Champagne Lanson Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on August 1.

The four-year-old has won all three of his starts this season, including victories in the Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes and Coral Eurobet Eclipse Stakes.

Stoute could also be represented in the Group One contest by No Excuse Needed, who met with serious trouble in running when finishing fifth in the St James's Palace stakes, beaten just two and a quarter lengths by Aidan O'Brien's Black Minnaloushe.

Black Minnaloushe is one of no less than 13 possibles for the Ballydoyle maestro, which also includes Bach, Mozart, Minardi and Mull Of Kintyre.

Misty Eyed is set to be aimed at Glorious Goodwood after delighting connections when third in Deauville at the weekend.

The Group Three King George Stakes on July 31 , won last year by Cassandra Go, has been selected as the filly's probable next target.
