There is a certain irony in the juxtaposition of the first two letters in Wednesday's Opinion (July 11).

Peter Fletcher pleads for more consideration for others, while David Allen argues for his right to "nip into the local shop for a packet of cigarettes" (even if that means parking illegally, since that is the only occasion when parking attendants would come into effect).

I wonder, is Mr Allen thinking about the situation on the Lewes Road, where drivers park on the cycle route to "nip in" to the off-licence, thus putting cyclists in real danger?

Or perhaps the case where someone parks near the bus stop to go to the cash machine and thereby holds up a whole line of traffic ? Or again, when drivers mount the pavement, thus making it difficult for pedestrians to pass, especially those with buggies or in wheelchairs?

Of course, if there was more consideration for others, these things would not happen but, in the absence of such consideration, surely we should welcome parking attendants, who will make sure, at the very least, people park in accordance with the rules and do not incommode others.
