Sussex have the perfect chance to get their Norwich Union League campaign up and running at last when day/night action returns to Hove on Monday.

Chris Adams' men are languishing in the Second Division's bottom three with just two wins to their credit.

Both of those were close-run affairs too.

They edged in by just one run away to Essex, then were in danger of throwing away a contest with Derbyshire which had seemed to be in their control for most of the afternoon.

Skipper Adams helped save that one with a sharp bit of work to run out Karl Krikken as Sussex edged in by nine runs on a chilly afternoon at Arundel.

Now a third win beckons at home to Essex, a result which would provide a timely boost after the County's Trophy disappointment in Manchester this week.

Sussex played to crowds of up to 4,500 in floodlit matches at Hove last season.

The club have set their sights on something around the 3,000 mark for Monday and strike bowler James Kirtley will be among those looking to bring them to their feet.

He reflected on the Trophy defeat by Lancashire and admitted: "It's another very important game for us.

"We have been looking to bring some new ideas and theories into the one day game.

"We have had a good record at Hove and we are more used to the lights than perhaps Essex will be.

"We are looking forward to setting a few records straight.

"The toss doesn't make much difference at Hove where the lights are good.

"What makes a difference is the fact that we get good crowds who are enthusiastic and fairly vocal so it is certainly something we get up for."

The final of the Sussex primary schools event, sponsored by Davies and Tate, will be staged at the County Ground before the Essex match on Monday. Ringmer take on Hawkes Farm in Hailsham.
