A man found stabbed to death probably killed himself, police said today.

Officers have now ruled out crime in connection with the death of Cal Erlam, who was found in his basement flat in Milner Road, Brighton.

The 29-year-old was discovered semi-naked in a pool of blood on June 25 after worried neighbours raised the alarm.

An extensive police inquiry was launched and dozens of people were interviewed.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Dennis, leading the inquiry, said: "This is a tragic case. Following numerous inquiries with a team of 30 officers and leading professionals we are satisfied this is not a case of murder."

Mr Dennis said police had spoken to numerous friends of the man but they still needed to trace his girlfriend, thought to be called Melissa, Emma or Lara.

One friend of Mr Erlam said he believed he had suffered from mental health problems which were being treated with medication.

Mr Erlam's death has now been referred to a coroner and an inquest will be held.
