Councillor Francis Tonks (Opinion, June 25) is right when he states an elected mayor will cost money.
However, it will be money well spent if an elected mayor shakes Brighton and Hove City Council out of its inertia towards solving the many problems in the city.
Derelict sites: No progress in 30 years. Transport: Anti-car without a proper public transport system as a replacement.
A sports stadium: No progress in three years. Rubbish collection: Chaos. West Pier: Enough said. I could go on - but to no avail, because nobody is listening.
As for getting the wrong person in for a four-year term, why not introduce a safety net of impeachment if the elected mayor turns out badly?
