For many years, the residents in my area have pleaded with the authorities for some kind of traffic calming before someone is killed.

Consequently, we were delighted when we were informed such measures were to be introduced.

The necessary work was carried out recently and, to all intents and purposes, it appears to have been a complete waste of time and money.

We assumed we would have speed humps and passing places, similar to those in Ditchling Rise and Hollingbury Road, where cars have no alternative but to slow down.

However, we have been left with two not very high pads, which the motorists are more or less ignoring.

There is a motorcyclist who lives in this neighbourhood who, every evening, roars up the road at speeds which must approach 60 or 70mph.

To make life easier for him, a nice little gap has been left between the pads, so he will not even have to slow down on his nightly ride.

When we asked why these measures did not appear to meet the requirements, we were informed we had to make allowances for the emergency services.

Surely the emergency services have to go down Ditchling Rise and Hollingbury Road as well as other roads with these traffic-calming measures? Has there been a great outcry from the emergency services ?

There have already been a number of cats killed by drivers who refuse to slow down but, obviously, a child will have to be killed or injured before any serious action is taken.
