Sussex destroyed Staffordshire by 86 runs to lift the English Women's Association Under-19s Trophy.

The county completed their fourth victory in six successive national finals and coach Terry Burton hailed it as their "best ever team performance".

Kate Oakenfold, the England player from Brighton and Hove Ladies, scored 57 runs and captain Charlotte Burton took 3-7 with her off-spin.

The final, staged at Uttoxeter, was held over from last year because of the fuel crisis Coach Burton, Charlotte's father says Sussex excel because of their team spirit.

He said: "What impressed me most was the whole team. I've never seen a team display better than that. They gelled completely.

"In the past we've had exceptional individuals like Clare Connor. But now the whole team does well.

"The wickets were shared out in the final and others did well with the bat besides Kate, like Caroline, Rosalie Birch and the middle order. The fielding was also excellent.

"Staffordshire put out Yorkshire and Lancashire, so they were strong. It just emphasises how good Sussex are. The team slaughtered them."

Burton says the support of Sussex County Cricket Club has helped.

He said: "Their back up has been fantastic. They've set up excellent winter coaching for the girls with coaches like John Barclay and Steve Gatting and our final win shows it is paying off."

It was the first time Charlotte had captained Sussex to national glory.

She said: "Before it was Clare Connor and Tamsyn Kelson, but I took over last year so it is a real bonus for me.

"It was also a big plus for Caroline and myself.

"We only got to play because it was held over from last year, otherwise we'd have been too old. It means we played in all six finals.

"The wicket was slow and low but our team spirit got us through. Everybody did something."

Sussex defeated Surrey, Kent, Surrey, Middlesex, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire on the way to the final.

Now they have to prepare for this year's competition which begins at the end of next month.

Alexia Walker is likely to take over the captaincy.
