Don't expect miracles when Govia takes over South Central rail services from Connex, perhaps as soon as June.

The new operators will initially still be faced with huge problems, including old trains, dilapidated stations and track which is far from modern on some lines.

But Govia's offshoot Thameslink has generally made a reasonable job of running Thameslink services from Brighton to Bedford despite many of the same problems facing Connex.

Govia also has an advantage Connex never had of a long franchise which will give it the confidence to make the major investment which is so badly needed.

Rail demand is buoyant on these lines given the right conditions. If Govia proves to be a good operator, it should please most passengers and make a return on its substantial spending.
