I know the Reverend John Webster has a vested interest in a "religious revival" (Opinion, April 23) but by this I suspect he means his form of religion.

All over the world, where any religion has any control over the population, there is nothing but bigotry and intolerance of other ideas, leading in extremes to ethnic cleansing.

In some places, birth control is preached against, causing suffering to countless millions.

Many dictators have used religion as a tool to attack minorities. Adolf Hitler's troops even had "Gott Mit Uns" on their belt buckles.

The last great "revival" in Europe was the Reformation. This led to the deaths of millions through wars, burnings and hangings of so-called heretics by both sides. This legacy of sectarianism is causing wars in Europe to this day.

It's time to forget about the "good old days". There never was a golden age and there never will be.
