Sussex is leading the way in attracting new recruits into the police force.
Home Office figures released today show the number of people hoping to become officers has more than doubled.
Eighty-five recruits started residential training in the year 1999/2000. In the financial year ending last month, the figure more than doubled to 180.
The national total was 2,800 extra recruits during the last year thanks to financial investment and an advertising campaign.
Home Office Minister Lord Bassam of Brighton said: "Sussex figures are outstripping national figures in terms of recruitment."
Sussex Police aims to have taken on 130 extra officers by the end of next March.
Today's figures relate to the first year of the £450m Crime Fighting Fund introduced by Home Secretary Jack Straw.
It aims to boost police numbers in England and Wales by 9,000 over three years, and today's results suggest that the campaign is so far hitting its target.
